I am really enjoying my job here at the Madras Safeway Starbucks! They put me on the morning shift, (without asking, by the way), which means that pretty much every morning I get up at 4am, FOUR IN THE MORNING, to get to work by 4:30am and get the store kiosk ready for opening. As a consequence of this and the fact that I still do not have a driver's license, either Nathan or Rick also must get up that early. It has created quite a bit of strife in our relationships. :) So in the near-ish future I will need to take the driving test.... Ugh!
I actually like the morning shift, even though it means getting up at ungodly-hours, because it allows me to get up and really start my day. Left to myself, I rise gracefully from my bed around 9:30ish, and I definitely don't get up before the sun! Those days are long gone now... Sleeping in has retracted to 6am. But as I said, this is good for me! I usually get up with the idea of going straight back to bed after work, but this rarely happens. There are always things to do: clothes to be washed, laps to be ran, dogs to be played with, Instagram photos to be taken, and blog posts to write.
I have learned while working as a barista, that the stereotype of angry people in the morning wanting their coffee, is just that, a stereotype. I have found that the people whom I see regularly at my kiosk, are generally cheerful, patient people. They are, (if not glad), OK with being awake and excited about their morning coffee, (made specially for them by the lovely hands of yours truly). The lovely attitudes I encounter only make my morning more bright and allow me to temporarily forget the fact that I haven't had breakfast....(I could get up at 3am and have time for breakfast; but lets be real, that is never going to happen). My coworkers are also very cheerful and generally good to be around. They are very encouraging and patient with me, but by no means doing anything for me. I've become quite capable at making lattes!
Oh and P.S.
Because I get up so early and "don't have time" for breakfast, we decided to make things ahead of time. I freeze scones and then take one out the night before work. I made some the other day, and it was mostly a success, except for the forgot sugar and dropped scones....| making scones |
